| Kanchenjunga Trekking |
The far East:
The far-east region of Nepal provides unique treks along
rarely visited trails. One of the main attractions is
the spectacular along the way. Deer and wild sheep are
often spotted in the area and birds are found in abundance.
The region is home to ethnic groups of Kirants, notably
the Rais and Limbus. The popular trekking areas in this
region are Kanchenjunga area, Milke Danda and Jaljale
Himal. In general, the region has not developed to cater
to independent trekkers so groups must be fully self sufficient.
Getting there: The starting points for
treks in the fast east are a Basantapur, Taplejung and
Tumlingtar. Basantapur needs minimum of sixteen hours
drive from Kathmandu. There are no tourist bus service
so trekkers must either use scheduled bus services or
arrange private transport. Another option is flying to
Tumlingtar or taplejung from the capital. The flight take
approximately 1 hours to Biratnagar and then to Taplejung
about 40 minutes.
Permits and fees: Much of the trekking
area lies within the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area and
a Permit fee is required for entry. Trekkers arriving
via Kakarbitta border point must first travel to Kathmandu
to obtain trekking permits as the government immigration
office at Kakarbhitta doesn’t issue he required
permit. The best time to trek in the region is between
September and May
Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek is an ideal trekking route
for those with time and desire to venture into some of
the remote regions of Nepal. Kanchenjunga is the third
highest mountain in the world at 8586 meters, and is a
magnificent peak striding the border between Nepal and
India. Trekking in Kanchenjunga trail begins along the
Tamur River through Pipal trees and villages where traditional
life is little touched by the modern world.
This includes those of the Limbu people, famous for inventing
Tongba (the highland concoction made from fermented millet)
and as the mainstays in the British Gorkha Regiments.
Passing through some of the country's most pristine oak
and rhododendron forests brings you to harsher high terrain.
Crossing the Mirgin-La pass at 4725 meters gives you views
of Makalu, Chamlang and Everest. Next you will pass the
Kanchanjunga glacier, and finally you are rewarded with
an incredible, close-up view of Kanchanjunga peak as you
approach the Kanchenjunga base camp at Pang Pema. while
exploring the surrounding area you will also see a panorama
of Wedge Peak, The Twins, Pyramid Peak and Tent Peak.

Swayambunath Stupa (Monkey Temple). It is said
that Swayambunath Stupa is more than 2,000 years
old, and it symbolizes knowledge. The painted
eyes on all four sides symbolize the all-seeing
power of Buddha. It is an important Buddhist
place where pilgrims from all over the world
come. It is situated to the west of the city
on a hill some 77 meters above the valley.
It is a 30 minutes drive to Boudhanath Stupa,
another important Buddhist pilgrims site. This
ancient Stupa is considered one of the biggest
in the World. Every morning and evening, many
Buddhist devotees come here to pray and circumambulate
enabling the visitors to observe local religious
practices.
The sacred Hindu temple Pashupatinath is considered
the holiest cremation ground, and people bathe
in the Bagmati River with a faith of cleansing
themselves spiritually. Many Sadhus or Hindu
